Hiberno-Norse Imitative PAXS Penny
Obv: Crude bust facing left with hair represented by radiate lines ending in pellets. The bust divides the legend at the bottom. The legend as usual with this type is blundered. Rev: Short plain cross pattee bounded by an inner circle. In each angle of the cross is a circle enclosing the blundered letters of the word PAXS. Blundered legend between inner and outer circle. The obverse is is a degraded copy of the head of Aethelred II , while the reverse is copied from an issue of William Ist 'ds PAXS penny. References : The Earliest Irish Coinage ( O' Sullivan) plate #27 and Spink Coins of Scotland and Ireland # 6157. The weight of the coin is 1.1 grams. Nicely struck but with some ghosting on obverse.
