Trajan Decius, a general under Philip I, was sent to crush the revolt of Pacatian, but was forced by his troops to declare himself emperor and march upon Italy. At a great battle fought at Verona, Philip's forces were defeated. Decius spent the rest of his reign combating barbarians, ending with his defeat and murder, along with his son, by Gothic forces.
